ABOUT HUGH
As a teen, I wrote a college Application Essay that was published in Harper’s. John F Kennedy Jr. read my essay, tracked me down at my NYU dorm, and we had a beer at the White Horse Tavern.
John introduced me to Jann Wenner and my journalism career kicked off with features for Rolling Stone. I also wrote for Wired, Harper's and the Beastie Boy’s Grand Royal, and my novel Teeth was published by Simon & Schuster. Jumping to business, my branding career took off at New York's Arnell Group. It continued with MRM Worldwide, Ogilvy, and side projects like the script for the classic Daft Punk video, Da Funk.
In 2008, i relocated to Portland, Oregon, where I worked extensively with Nike, Cinco design, and Microsoft. in 2012, I entered the Asian marketplace. Based in Bangkok, I landed a book contract with Harper Collins and wrote features for Newsweek— including a first hand account of the 2014 coup d’etat. After working with local Bangkok agencies and tech startups as a consultant, I was the lead writer for the launch of Gogoro in Taipei.
Signing with Adidas Brand Design, I worked for two years in Europe and the UK, including creative for the World Cup. Since then, I have written books, freelanced as a brand creative, and played lots of petanque. I am a dual US/EU citizen, graduate of New York University, creator of Von Von Von, and work with brand clients around the world.
